When you set/create a prototype for a Page Layout, the items in the "New Content" area (when browsing the site with admin on) don't preserve the prototype settings, however, when you go into the admin panel and browse the asset tree, and select the prototype from the New Content menu they do work and show the correct. This is only on Page Layouts and not any of the other Asset Types that are prototypes.

I don't see any difference in behavior between the admin bar and asset panel or between page layouts and other asset types. Style Template, Printable Style, permissions, being hidden, and the url are always based on the parent of where you add the asset, not the prototype. This is by design.

I replicated this in this demo site: http://demo.plainblack.com/demo1180538157_815/home Basically, the prototypes exhibit different behaviour inside and outside of the Asset Panel browse mode. Here's what I did: I created an article prototype. Clicked a few settings, committed and saved. I went and used the prototype to create a new article from Browse Mode. Look at the setting for the Article being created with the prototype. Now go into the Asset Panel, and create a new article using the prototype you created, and look at the settings. Why do they keep the same settings in one place, but don't work in another? We have tried this for a couple of different Wobject types and still see similar beahviour- I think page layout are the only ones that work both places. Most of the other wobject type prototypes don't work (behave different in browse and asset panel mode). We have used the folder, collaboration, and article prototypes.

I apologize, I missed seeing the demo site you created.
I performed the steps you listed, but am not seeing any difference between assets created with the sidebar vs the asset panel. Which specific settings are you seeing different?

The items selected under display don't appear to be saving for most Wobject types. I just tested it by creating an Article Prototype wobject. We were seeing different behavior for some of the fields on the properties, display, and security tabs. The properties tab seems o.k. as far as article is concerned. The display and security tabs are still problematic in my testing- who can view and the hide from navigation (setting it t no) don't appear to be saving. This was an issue with multiple wobject types- not just article.

There are two different issues you have brought up here. 1. Properties being different if you create an asset (from prototype) with the admin bar compared to if you create it in the asset panel. I'm not able to reproduce this. 2. Properties not being copied from the prototype to the created asset. Title, Menu Title, URL, being a prototype, being a package, being hidden, Style Template, Printable Style, and Permissions not copied from the prototype, but set just like if you were creating a standard asset. This is by design. All the other properties are copying successfully in my observations.
