WebGUI article in German linux magazine

I just did a search on the page of the German linux magazine. Interestingly, I found an article on WebGUI from 2004. That is a long time ago. I think we should get in touch and ask them for an update. Does anyone have experience with these things? What is usually the best strategy in order to get this done?

Buying documentation from plainblack

Yesterday, a stupid idea came to my mind: Something that has been bothering me about WebGUI for a while is that it does not come with a decent online help. I believe that this really hampers its spread in the online world. My co-administrators, for example, often have problems with adding new content. But whenever I offer them my hardcopy of the content manager's guide they refuse to take it. They do not want to spend so much time on reading. In addition, I only of one copy.

WebGUI Drinks

I think it is time for some competition. Klaus and me recently noticed that we are going to live close-by soon (Rhine-Neckar Region, Germany). Hence, we (or at least me) decided to initiate regular WebGUI drinks similar to those in the Netherlands. Who would be interested to join? We could start to meet some time in November - possibly once a month. Please, drop me a note. I am going to make this anouncement on www.webgui-cms.de in addition.

Could someone help me, please, to understand how the "specific URL" start point type is meant to be used in the naviation asset? The obvious choice of specifying an URL in the start point field does not work. Unfortunately, there is no help given in the Content Manager's Guide. I could only find an example in which the start point is set to "Root", which I would not consider an URL at all. Still it works. Thanks for any hints in advance!

Who should own the files under /data/wre, /data/WebGUI, and /data/domains? I posted yesterday about the modperl/proxy and spectre services crashing and wonder if ownerships and write permissions might have something to do with the problem. Starting everything up under MacOS X seems more complicated than under Linux because, since mysqld fails if started by root and the wreconsole interface has to be running as root to start the other webgui services, some of the files are owned by root, some by webgui, and some by my personal account uid.

Bad gateway errors, random service failures

I'm a new WebGUI user. I recently installed wre-0.8.3 on a Mac Pro running OS X Leopard. The installation hosts two sites on the same server. Over about three weeks I've seen a few unexplained service failures including one time when Spectre stopped running (easily fixed) but the strangest are failures where trying to connect to either site gives a "Bad gateway" error which has happened twice now. The first time I noticed apache and Spectre still running and guessed that it was a failure of either the mod_proxy or mod_perl services (or both) but could not figure out how to tell for sure because after starting wreconsole.pl, port 60834 refused connections and the running apache was refusing *all* connections and wouldn't restart after being killed so I rebooted the machine, which fixed everything but left me scratching my head. (I didn't know at that time where the error logs were.) This morning I also got "bad gateway" but the wreconsole interface worked and I found that mod_perl and mod_proxy were both stopped and was able to restart them using the interface. Later I checked the modproxy error log and found it full of (1000+) failed connection attempts to the site I was trying to access at the time, with timestamps over a few seconds, then 3 last lines with no timestamp

We've recently begun to use Thingy for some of our new projects. Overall we're pleased with the possibilities it provides. However there are several areas that need improvement such as searching (no support for advanced search, limited support for sorting) and reporting (there is 1 search results template which limits the reusability of the data collected into the db).

enableStreamingUploads and RTF problem

When users downloaded PDF, DOC, RTF.. files, by default they got redirect to "/uploads/..." and they complained about strange URLs. This was solved by setting enableStreamingUploads to 1 in config. Since then Firefox displays RTF files inline as plain text (IE is fine). I checked http header (using curl -i): Content-Type is text/plain, which seems to me not quite right. Setting enableStreamingUploads back to 0 and testing same RTF file from uploads showed Content-Type text/rtf which looks better and Firefox handled it fine. My question is if my setup is somehow not right (if so, where?) or does it look like WebGUI bug?

Which Web Hosting Sites?

Hello. I'm fairly new here and I hope this is the right forum for this question. I plan on learning and using WebGUI for building a new website. I have been looking into Web Hosting. And I have a question on the server type. I've read that the only big difference between server types is the kind of software you are using to edit your Web Page. That some are better for others.

My problem is that when this is embedded in a page layout everything looks nice but, when i follow one of the links within this (forum) my layout changes.
Search duplication

So perhaps I'm using the AssetProxy macro incorrectly but here's what's going on. I've got a Search Bar asset that I've put within my own folder in ImportNode. I wanted to add it to my "main page/master template" (that is persistant regardles off what page you go to in the site like the menu on the left side here and the logo at the top, not sure of the terminology) but that is a template. So I decided to use ^AssetProxy within that template so that the search bar was always available. The problem I'm getting now, however, is that when you try to search for something, the search results are placed right below the search bar (in the master template) as WELL as being passed into body.content (with the searchbar again for some reason). So I end up having a search bar and the results TWICE on my page (once in the master template, and once through the body.content). How would I fix this? Thanks!

So I've been trying to find some info on resizing the search box, and there were a couple of hacks provided in the past, but no recent information as to whether an easier way has been created. What is the easiest way to resize a search box? Also, where do I find data on the ^? macro's parameters? Is this it: http://www.webgui.org/downloads/builds/7.4.29-stable/api/Asset/Wobject/Search.html Finally, where is the actual code that adds the form(text box/submit button). I can't seem to find it anywhere (ive searched the database too). I figure if I can find that I can easily figure out how to change the width. Thanks! Tim

Performance problem

I have been using Webgui 5.x for many years but now since some months the website is at times so slow it can takes minutes before a page shows up. The site is running on a dedicated server, W2003, 1 G ram. Apache 2.x, Perl 5, MySQL 4 After investigating the log files it looks like its slow when one of the crawler bots is crawling the site. At those times I can see CPU usage of apache and mysql go to 100%. Somtimes I have to kill apache to make the site usable again. I have tried to upgrade the webgui to the current version but sofar I got stuck on 6.2.11. This did not help much. I have also upgraded apache and mysql to a more recent version. As a temporary solution I have made a static html copy of the site and I am running this under IIS. From time to time I bring the original webgui site back up but within hours its slow again. This is very annoying as it makes webgui unusable. Any idears what to do ? Is there a way to validate the database ? I noticed in the page tree there is one page that cannot be deleted, could that cause this problem ? Lex

Custom template variables

Hey guys, I tried hard to find an answer to this before I came because I figured it was something other people had tried to do... but no luck. I'd like to insert my own template variables into my templates, so that I don't have to create a macro for every result I want. If I want to do this, where would I define these and how do I go about doing it? An example would be something like: news.summary, news.totalArticles, etc. If I have a lot of those in one template file, it becomes a pain to create a macro to return a result for each one. If I knew where to find the code for the template variables in other templates, that'd be a useful starting point. Thanks for the help!

Macro inserting as text

So i'm stumped on this one. I've made a macro to check if a user is within a certain group and to return some values if they are. It looks like this: =head2 process( groupName, [linkHref], [linkText]). What I first had it doing was checking if the user was in the passed in groupName, and return true if so, or false if not. This worked, but then I couldn't figure out how to use that in the code, i had something like: <tmpl_if ^UserGroupCheck("Admins")> <div> <a href ... </div> </tmpl_if> but that doesnt work, as I dont think you can call a macro within a templ_if statement. This isn't the problem I'm having now, but a solution to this would be great :P. So now, I have the user pass in the href info and the text they wanted hypertexted so that the macro just returns a nice and pretty <a href ... /a> statement. The problem I'm having is that when I try to use my function : <div> ^UserGroupCheck("Admins", "news.html", "Add News Item"); </div>, it simply inserts the ^UserGroupCheck(...) as text on the webpage instead of actually running the macro. Any idea as to why this is happening? Thanks a lot!

Data Form list column widths

Hi there, Can anyone tell me how to change the width of a particular column in the Data Form list? Not the field names, but on the page that shows the results of the Data Form entries. I have a Comment box as one of my fields. The comments that people write are hard to read because the column is quite squished so I'd like to shrink the size of some of the other columns or set a hard-and-fast width for the Comment box. I'm currently creating a website and hosting it on my laptop (localhost) using WebGUI. However, I notice that the pages take just as long to load as if I wasn't hosting the website on my computer. It works, and all the pages/functions load, but it takes a long time, as if it's routing it externally and then back to my computer or something. I am behind a router and using a wireless connection, but should that matter? Any help would be appreciated, thank you! Tim

troubleshooting LDAP connections

We're running wG 7.4.24 on CentOS now, and I've been sort of working on this problem off & on for a while now. Where I work I have to bind to our company's AD in order to run some sort of authentication. They require SSL authentication. So the server URL is ldaps.mycompany.com:636. I've tried to set the protocol to ldaps://, but every time I try that I get an error. To be more precise it's: Error: Malformed LDAP URL. LDAP URLs must include the protocol, i.e., ldap://hostname/ I can force the URL in the MySQL DB. At least I think I can. Now I'm not 100% certain I need to set it to ldaps://, but if it set to that or ldap://, it reads as a valid connection. Whenever I try to login with one of the company's users, webgui.log tells me that the user is trying to login with invalid information. I'm at a loss here and am hoping someone might be able to help out. I've looked at most every LDAP related thread here and haven't found an answer to my problem. I've even looked through the online Help, etc. Any thoughts? I can, of course, provide more specific information if necessary. TIA, gabe

SQL Report how to use prequery statements

Hi all, I have an SQL report that I use to search through several Collaboration Systems. I want both a percentage relevance and a total number of found pages. For this I need the highest relevance and the number of found rows. Therefore I do the search twice. The first time I limit the results to one and order on relevance, so I get the highest relevance that I can use to calculate the percentage. At the same time I use the SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS function, so I can display the found rows in the next query. For this last thing I put in the prequery statement of the second query: set @rows := FOUND_ROWS(); However this does not work. With debug on, the SQL Report says: Debug: Prequery statement is not allowed: set @rows := FOUND_ROWS(); But even if I use the example from the hoover-help it says: Debug: Prequery statement is not allowed: set @myVariable := 3 How am I supposed to use prequery statements? (Btw if somebody knows how to use a value from the first returning row of the result in all other rows of the same result, that would be helpfull as well, but I think that's not possible.)
Before You Post

Here are some things you should do before asking your question: 1) Check the WebGUI Community Wiki. There is a lot of information in here, on both common and obscure tasks. Check here first. 2) Search the WebGUI.org site. This search includes both the Wiki and the Forums, and may come up with things the Wiki doesn't have. Any suggestions to be added to this list, please reply to this thread.

Store Front help

Hi, I'm trying to build a store with WebGUI. I've been through the nice slide shows and they've been very helpful, but I don't see anything really pertaining to actually building a store and managing products, etc, etc. I'm curious, am I missing something in the documentation somewhere? Is there a howto somewhere? Is there anyone place someone could direct me for more help or more resources, and/or more training?
