If WRE can detect the latest stable code version and install it, is there a way to download and install the latest BETA using this same method?

When it asks you which version you want to install just type:

7.5.5-beta

Or whatever version you want it to install.

I couldn't install the current beta version, 7.5.11. I didn't know where to type the version I wanted so I downloaded it and tarred it in the /data folder before I clicked on Manual Install in the WRE Console.

But I got this error, "Couldn't connect to MySQL because DBI connect('test;host=localhost;port=3306','root',...) failed: Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO) at /data/wre/lib/WRE/Mysql.pm line 93 at /data/wre/sbin/wreconsole.pl line 1211"

Could you please explain in more detail how to install a beta version using the WRE; maybe I missed something.

Sorry, the instructions I gave above were actually for upgrading to a beta using webguiupgrade.pl that comes with the WRE. And that was poor on my part.

Yes to install beta on a fresh WRE you create /data, extract wre tarball, and follow the instructions in wre/docs/install.txt.

When you get to the final screen of the wreconsole.pl screen (where it says do you want to do an automatic or manual install), then manually download and extract the webgui-7.5.11-beta.tar.gz file into /data/WebGUI and then back in the wreconsole.pl click on "Manual Install".

In the next release of the WRE there will actually be an "automatic install" option for beta in addition to the stable release, but for now it's a manual process.

If you follow the instructions to the letter then it will work. Make sure you start with a clean wre, not one that you half installed some other time. And make sure you kill any processes that might be still running from your old WRE.

The error message you got sounds to me like you are running from a half installed copy of the WRE.
