Plain Black Corporation® has published its WebGUI Roadmap for the upcoming year, outlining many new features users can expect in the WebGUI® 7.x series. These features will add exciting new functionality and a more attractive appearance to the WebGUI content management system's already feature-rich user interface.

Non-developers will be pleased to meet the Thingy, a point and click web-based application builder that requires no knowledge of Perl, HTML, CSS or Javascript. The Thingy can be used to build employee directories, contact lists, inventory databases, and more. Data input into these forms can then be viewed within WebGUI or exported for use in external applications.

YouTube© meets Flickr© in WebGUI's new Gallery, a new media management feature that provides thumbnails, albums, ratings, cross linking, tagging, and more for images and movies. Multiple photo gallery, slide show and video templates are available, and can be set up to allow gallery visitors to comment on and rate content.

WebGUI's Commerce System will also be renovated and streamlined to make the entire process of setting up a store simpler. A better back-end with hooks will be introduced for special after purchase processing, and there is new functionality to deal with unique items. A plugin for Paypal will be built in and many new helper macros will be introduced. The existing products system will merge with the product display application for easier display of products for sale. In addition to all this, the entire checkout process will be made simpler, more streamlined, and prettier.

A new maps component in WebGUI will be tied to the Google Maps® API. Users will be able to add their own location pins to a map with data attached to those pins. This will allow users to build locators for businesses that have physical locations, such as restaurants and stores, or allow “where are you" type applications. For example, all the WebGUI users in the world could show where they are on a giant map.

In addition to these new features, the WebGUI administrative interface will receive a facelift. Changes will be made to the many CSS, Javascript, and image files that currently compose the administrative interface. These changes will improve the appearance, as well as provide better speed and performance by using fewer resources on the network and server.  In 2001, Plain Black released the first public version of WebGUI. Today, WebGUI is one of the most popular open source content management systems available. Plain Black offers support, training, and customization of WebGUI and the technologies related to WebGUI. Seems great.

1-What I would really like to see is thingy having the ability to have relations in the data in multiple tables as well as the ability to have unique or index columns.

2-And about crosslinking and tagging in the media manager, I would love to have that on all content. I would like to go one step further and define a general inter-asset relation module. So that for any asset I can relate it with a NAMED relation to any other asset and the relation cen be one or two way. This enables endless oppertunities.

Example uses

  • For example you can have relation between a page about a movie and all the actor pages on your site as actors.
  • Same applies for sports teams and members in it and a sperate named relation between the sports team and the trainer for it.
  • Product upsells and cross sells can be done with this.
  • Having links to the support, downloads etc pages of a product on the product page while these asstes are located under the support section of the site.

The uses are really limitless since what we are doing here is making the CMS more consious of the relations between the content it hosts.

Also you sait youtube will you be adding a avi-mov-mpg-etc to flash converter? This could be easily done via a workflow. Though the installation of the requirements for this are hardish.

Overall thanks for all the good work.
