Only when Admin is ON, immediately above each asset's admin control buttons in a pageloop can be a toolbar with a [+] followed by icons representing popular (or all?) New Content types.
When clicking the [+], it brings a text-listing of all the "New Content Types" available, while clicking the representative icons allows a "Quick Add here" of the asset type represented.
The point: Assets can be added in-line "above" the current asset that already exists. If the current Asset is at, say, Position 2, the new quick-add article is now at position 2 and all subsequent assets shift down their position.
The value: Content managers can visually add assets where they want, without moving eyes and cursor to the left menu to find frequently used Assets. The QuickAdd part allows icons to represent content that can be added without searching for a name. The Add part is simply an inline listing (with hyperlinks) after clicking the [+].
There are ways to use Javascript to list the items once and simply display that list only when the [+] is clicked, so the [+] list doesn't have to add to screen load times in admin mode.
Long term: It would be nice to be able to design/edit the web page without consideration for the shifting occurred to using the Admin on left toolbar.
