Madison, WI 53703, Phone: (608) 257-0158 On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission that landed two Americans on the moon, the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art has organized an exhibition of Robert Rauschenberg's Stoned Moon Series. In July of 1969, Rauschenberg was invited by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to witness the launch of the Apollo 11 spacecraft on Cape Canaveral at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Several days after the event, Rauschenberg decided to create a personal response in the form of an extended print series of thirty-four lithographs. Selecting official photographs and diagrams from NASA's archive as a basis for the project, Rauschenberg traveled to Los Angeles to produce the series in collaboration with the publishing workshop Gemini G.E.L. Space exploration became a major subject in Rauschenberg's during the 1960s. The consummate expression of this theme is the Stoned Moon Series.

Madison Trust's Historic Walking Tour Every Saturday this summer the Trust will explore a different historic neighborhood, in addition to offering the popular State St. tours every week. Our interactive tours are given by experienced and enthusiastic docents, and each concludes with a free treat at a local restaurant. Don’t miss these opportunities to enhance your appreciation of Madison’s first 150 years. All tours last about an hour, except Bascom Hill, which is an hour and a half. No reservations are required, simply show up at each tour’s designated starting point. Docents are ready rain or shine. Tours cost $5 per person and are free to members of the Madison Trust. This weekly tour features the historic buildings of Madison’s famous downtown street, and the stories of the people who lived and worked between the Capitol and the University of Wisconsin campus. The 1-hour tour meets at the House of Wisconsin Cheese, 107 State Street, and ends with a free junior ice cream at the Chocolate Shoppe $5, free for members of the Trust.

Governor's Mansion ToursEach guided tour lasts 20 to 30 minutes and includes a brief history and view of the rooms on the first floor. Visitors can also stroll through the gardens and enjoy a view of Lake Mendota. The Executive Residence is handicapped accessible. Roys, a Smith College botany student whose written descriptions, hand-drawn plans, and striking photography capture the landscapes of a vanished era. Roys eventually settled in Madison with her husband Nash Williams and was known to Madisonians as Betty Williams. She was instrumental in area garden clubs and, together with her husband, a strong supporter of Olbrich Botanical Gardens.
